ASA 105 / 106 Combination Course (Coastal Navigation & Advanced Coastal Cruising) - Burnham Harbor - July 10 -13, 2025 (HOPE FLOATS)
We are proud to offer a combination ASA 105 (Coastal Cruising) & ASA 106 (Advanced Coastal Cruising) course over an intensive 4 day program that prepares the sailor to safely act as skipper and crew of a sailing vessel about 30 to 50 feet in length in coastal and inland waters, in any condition.
During the Coastal Navigation Course (ASA 105) on Thursday and Friday, we will apply navigational theory and practices for safe navigation of a sailing vessel in coastal and inland waters. Topics in this class include using tide and current tables, determining courses and bearings, plotting a dead reckoning position on a chart, calculating the effect of current and leeway, and charting position from terrestrial objects. This course will give students the experience necessary to chart a course of at least 20 miles and three course changes.
On Friday night, we will determine the DR route for the lake crossing. After completing this, we will leave the harbor for the weekend on an extended coastal sail (including overnight sailing). During this course, we will learn new concepts, manage the extended sail, and put into practice advanced sailing techniques and skills.
The prerequisites for this combination course are the ASA 101, Basic Keelboat Sailing; ASA 103, Basic Coastal Cruising; ASA 104 Bareboat Cruising courses. Taken together, this combination course is one of the capstone courses for the American Sailing Association, so students should have the practical skills, knowledge, and experience with significant sailing experience to ensure that one gets the most of the learning environment.
