ASA 105 & 106 (Coastal Navigation & Advanced Coastal Cruising) - Burnham Harbor - September 10-13, 2026 (Jaeger Bomb)

$2,480.00

This course will give students the experience necessary to chart a course of at least 20 miles and three course changes.

There are no prerequisites for this course. ASA 105 is a prerequisite for ASA 106. It is also very helpful for those students who are looking to bareboat charter a sailboat in locations like the BVI, Croatia, etc.

We are proud to offer a combined Coastal Navigation Course (ASA 105) and ASA 106 (Advanced Coastal Cruising) course taught over an intensive 4 day program that prepares the sailor to:

  • Apply navigational theory and practices for safe navigation of a sailing vessel in coastal and inland waters.

  • To safely act as skipper and crew of a sailing vessel about 30 to 50 feet in length in coastal and inland waters, in any condition.

On Thursday and Friday, we will cover coastal navigation. Topics in this class include using tide and current tables, determining courses and bearings, plotting a dead reckoning position on a chart, calculating the effect of current and leeway, and charting position from terrestrial objects.

On Friday night, we will determine the DR route for the Lake Michigan crossing. After completing this, we will leave the harbor for the weekend on an extended coastal sail (including overnight sailing). During this course, we will learn new concepts, manage the extended sail, and put into practice advanced sailing techniques and skills.

The prerequisites for this combination course are the ASA 101, Basic Keelboat Sailing; ASA 103, Basic Coastal Cruising; ASA 104 Bareboat Cruising courses. Taken together, this combination course is one of the capstone courses for the American Sailing Association, so students should have the practical skills, knowledge, and experience with significant sailing experience to ensure that one gets the most of the learning environment.
